This page includes three different route options so travelers can choose between speed, comfort, and a full overland expedition.

Tour Overview

This tour is ideal for travelers who want more than a standard sightseeing route. It combines remote landscapes, simple but authentic accommodation, and the feeling of traveling through one of the least urbanized and most visually powerful parts of the country.

The Tsengel area offers a more authentic mountain atmosphere where nature, camp life, and nomadic movement shape the rhythm of the trip.

Accommodation and Transport

In the Altai region, infrastructure is much more basic than in central Mongolia. In remote protected zones, permanent resort-style buildings are restricted, so accommodation is mainly in tent camps. This keeps the experience close to nature and aligned with environmental protection rules.

All road travel in the region is done using 4x4 jeeps, which are essential for rough mountain roads, open valleys, river crossings, and remote access areas.

Important: This is an adventure-style journey. Comfort is simple, but the mountain scenery, cultural depth, and remoteness are exactly what make this tour special.

Two Ways to Reach the Camp Area

Inside the Altai region, the final approach to the camp area can be done in two different ways depending on route choice, weather, and traveler preference.

4x4 Vehicle Access One route allows direct access by off-road vehicle to the camp area.
Horseback Access Another route continues by horse for over 20 km through mountain trails where vehicles cannot go.

The exact local district used for vehicle access or horse access can be confirmed in the final itinerary.

Three Route Options

Because Bayan-Ulgii is one of the farthest regions from Ulaanbaatar, this tour can be organized in three different ways. Travelers can choose the option that best fits their time, comfort level, and interest in a larger Mongolia expedition.

Option 1: Fly In / Fly Out

This is the fastest and most comfortable version of the Altai tour. Travelers fly directly from Ulaanbaatar to Bayan-Ulgii, begin the western Mongolia experience immediately, and return by air.

  • Best for shorter travel time
  • Focuses directly on Bayan-Ulgii and Altai highlights
  • Ideal for travelers who want maximum experience with less overland driving

Option 2: Full Overland Expedition

This is the most adventurous version. Travelers go overland from Ulaanbaatar to Bayan-Ulgii by 4x4, crossing major regions of Mongolia before reaching the Altai.

  • Possible highlights include Hustai National Park, Elsen Tasarkhai, Erdene Zuu, Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, Zavkhan, Uvs, and Bayan-Ulgii
  • Long-distance expedition with changing scenery and cultural regions
  • Best for travelers who want a true Mongolia road journey

Option 3: Fly One Way, Return by Road

This version offers the best balance between comfort and exploration. Travelers can fly to Bayan-Ulgii, enjoy the Altai experience, and then return overland through scenic regions of western and central Mongolia.

  • Saves time on one side of the trip
  • Still includes road-based exploration across multiple landscapes
  • Strong option for travelers who want both efficiency and adventure

Possible Extended Route Variations

This tour can also be customized beyond the standard Altai route. Depending on available time and road conditions, travelers may connect Bayan-Ulgii with other major regions of Mongolia.

Khuvsgul + Bayan-Ulgii Combination

Northern forests and lake scenery can be combined with western Mongolia for a longer cross-country expedition.

Zavkhan and Uvs Route

A western overland route may pass through remote steppe, mountain zones, and less-visited provincial landscapes.

Central Mongolia Return

Travelers returning eastward can include monastery sites, dunes, volcanic lake areas, and wildlife parks.

Flexible itinerary: Route details can be adjusted based on season, available days, driving pace, and whether the traveler prefers more cultural stops or more natural landscapes.
