Driving in Mongolia as a Foreigner
Foreign travelers may drive in Mongolia if they hold a valid driving license and meet local driving requirements.
Travelers from countries that signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic may usually drive with their valid national license and passport.
Some travelers may need an International Driving Permit or additional authorization depending on nationality, vehicle type and travel route.
Insurance and Driver Responsibility
Our vehicles include standard insurance. However, the driver remains responsible for damages caused by negligence, misuse or violation of rental conditions.
Driver responsibility may include:
- Off-road misuse
- River or water crossing damage
- Tire damage
- Windshield damage
- Undercarriage damage
- Traffic violations and camera fines
- Driving under the influence of alcohol
- Damage caused by careless driving
Authorization and Notary Documents
For some vehicles, especially high-value 4WD cars such as Land Cruiser 200, Prado or Hilux, additional authorization documents may be required.
This may include a rental agreement, vehicle documents, insurance documents or notarized authorization allowing the renter to drive the vehicle.
Requirements may vary depending on the vehicle owner, insurance condition, rental period and travel route.
Deposit Policy
A refundable deposit may be required before the rental starts. The deposit amount depends on the vehicle type, rental duration, insurance condition and travel route.

Road Conditions in Mongolia
- Mongolia has right-hand traffic.
- Long distances between towns are common.
- Some countryside roads are unpaved or off-road.
- Fuel stations may be limited in remote areas.
- Mobile signal may be unavailable in some regions.
- Animals may cross the road without warning.
- Speed cameras and police checks are common.
Safety Advice
Many road accidents in Mongolia are related to tired driving, drunk driving, speeding, night driving and failure to switch headlights properly.
Never drive when tired or under the influence of alcohol. Avoid long night driving, especially in the countryside.
- Rest regularly during long-distance driving.
- Use headlights correctly at night.
- Follow speed limits.
- Use offline maps and GPS.
- Carry enough fuel, water and food for remote routes.
- Check road and weather conditions before departure.
- Do not attempt unknown river crossings without guidance.
Rental Conditions
- Fuel is not included in the rental price.
- Only registered drivers may drive the vehicle.
- The vehicle must be returned in the same condition.
- Traffic fines are the renter’s responsibility.
- Off-road restrictions may apply.
- Naadam and peak season availability is limited.
