What to Do If You Get Lost or Injured

When traveling in remote areas of Mongolia, situations such as getting lost, injuries, or lack of communication can occur. In such cases, staying calm and taking the right actions in order is critical.

All travelers must save the phone number of their guide, driver, or organizer, including WhatsApp contact, on their phone at all times.

You should also save the following emergency numbers:

  • Fire & Emergency: 101
  • Emergency contact: family, friends, or tour organizer

1. General Principles

  • Stay calm and assess your situation realistically.
  • Evaluate your location, weather, water, and food supplies.
  • Avoid unnecessary movement and conserve energy.
  • Stay in a visible and easy-to-find location.

2. In Case of Injury

  • Do not move the injured person unless necessary.
  • Stop any bleeding using pressure or bandages.
  • Keep the body warm and stable.
  • Avoid incorrect first aid treatment.
  • Seek professional medical help as soon as possible.

Incorrect first aid can worsen injuries. Always prioritize professional medical assistance.

3. If You Get Lost

  • Stay in one place if possible.
  • Use GPS or offline maps to identify your location.
  • Avoid traveling long distances at night or in extreme heat.
  • Leave visible signs such as stones, cloth, or markings.
  • Choose open areas where you can be easily seen.

4. In the Gobi Desert

  • Ration your water carefully.
  • Avoid movement during extreme heat and rest in shade.
  • If you find water, do not leave the area.
  • Wells are often deep and not visible from a distance.
  • People and animals regularly come to water sources.
  • Stay near water and make yourself visible.
  • Do not be misled by mirages.

In the Gobi, finding water significantly increases your chances of survival.

5. Fire – Essential for Survival

  • Always carry fire-starting tools when traveling.
  • Fire provides warmth and protection from animals.
  • At night, fire increases visibility for rescue.
  • During the day, smoke acts as a signal.

6. Shelter and Environment

  • Find protection from wind, sun, and cold.
  • Prepare for sudden temperature drops at night.
  • Do not eat unknown plants or berries.
  • Avoid close contact with wild animals.

7. Medical Preparation

  • Carry a basic first aid kit.
  • Bring your personal medications.
  • Include painkillers, bandages, and disinfectants.
  • Some medications may not be available in rural Mongolia.
