Khorgo Volcano
Khorgo is one of Mongolia’s best-known extinct volcanoes. The crater, lava formations, and nearby Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake create one of the most dramatic landscapes in central Mongolia.
What makes it special
Khorgo was formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. Ancient lava flows are believed to have helped create the natural dam that formed Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. The area feels both rugged and peaceful, with black lava rock, grassland, and lake views all in one place.
Local legend
Local stories say that a great flood once filled the valley and that people shouted warnings that gave the place its name. These stories add cultural depth to a landscape already shaped by dramatic geology.
